Intro to Entertainment Week 13
An entire semester has gone by without me posting but tonight was inspiring and I had to get some thoughts out. In class we went over storyboards and got a visit from Hong Ly who has taught most of my teachers here including Eric.
Hong briefly talked about Intrinsic motivation - and when you get serious about something you are compelled to do that thing and are always thinking about it. I know that I need to push myself more, but on the other hand I also feel that my love for drawing is growing and so its less about motivation now. Hong was saying that when someone is intrinsically motivated their work output skyrockets. Can't wait for me to get faster.
Its too bad that its the end of the semester now because I want the assignments to keep coming. I feel that art is consuming me.
Also when doing a technical illustration use illustrator fool! This easy assignment quickly turned into a nightmare with edits.

First day of internship
Awesome day. So tired. Two days of little sleep for class assignment and then getting up early for first day of internship. Such a commute - around an hour and a half maybe. Boom Studios is the place, super cool, good people. One of the guys I work with apparently knows Janelle Monae which is weird. I don't think I get star struck but hearing that some guy I work with is best friends with a pop star stole my voice. He's going to the Grammy's with her??
Anyway, the internship seems ok. I'm not sure how relevant the experience is going to be but at least I should be able to put stuff in my portfolio. Design: retouching artwork that isn't mine...
There are good things about design, its relevant at times I guess. The thing that irks me now is that I could be spending this time drawing, or working to get paid (so that I can draw more). I'm going to need to keep telling myself that this is a good insight into this business.

Where am I?
I've lost my way out here and don't know what direction to take. When I left Austin the idea was that I would come out here and be in school full-time until I was good enough to get a job in videogames. But whats happened since I got here? I've made good progress in my studies but haven't produced enough work to get a job and I'm not at the level yet to work in a game studio.
I never knew what part of games I wanted to work in either. Concept art, character design, environment...what else is there - I don't know. This semester I had the choice to take a storyboarding class, but is that what I want to do? I have no idea...I could like or hate it, is storyboarding even useful in games?
I probably need to take some studio tours and see how the art departments come together.
Anyway, my immediate concerns are getting my finances straight. I need a part time job or I need to figure out if there's any way that I can get funding to go back to school. How is Art Center so expensive!?! I could get into AC and come out pretty damn good but I would also get out with 90k in debt! How does this make sense!? Art school should not be a life burden.
